Gone were the simple systems of 2E, replaced by clunky, math-heavy encounters and ridiculously-detailed skills. Power creep, too many options, etc. all became issues that were eventually addressed in 5E (your mileage may vary on that, too).Castles and Crusades fixed it a LONG time ago.This is everything 3E --SHOULD-- have been. The SIEGE engine for skills is simple, direct, and makes gameplay a breeze. The classes received reasonable updates, THAC0 was replaced (ehh... I love THAC0 but I can see why others don't), and adventures all have that "classic" feel without having to completely discard everything AD&D was and is.Give this a shot. The best thing about each "edition" is that they're merely reprints with some fixes to grammar, spelling, format, etc. Castles and Crusades' rules don't change. C&C does a fantastic job of simplifying the game, using a great d20 mechanic, the Siege Engine. This book is very well packed with essentials to run the game. The sixth printing is attracting and moderately well edited. While this game is not anything new or revolutionary, it is good at what it does. C&C is one of my games of choice. Tip: unlike brand name D&D, you only need the Player's Handbook and Monsters & Treasure books.
