I recommend this product enthusiastically. **Q: Application rate per gallon of soil for top dressing?** A: When dry I use a tablespoon per plant, but usually I would rather mix a tablespoon per gallon of water and let it sit for 48 hours, it gets a little smelly but not horrible. Then I water the plants , get the soil wet and then stir the mixture really well while pouring around the roots of the plant....Why do this? It takes awhile for this to break down in the soil, so by making a slurry solution and stir it while I pour it into wet soil , it diffuses, goes deeper , and is absorbed faster. I usually will mix this with Espoma bloom builders and make a good tea , mixing 1/2 and 1/2 into the water. I try to do this about 1/2 hour before the ground warms up well, so it will coincide with the best absorption time and yes it is spendy but I budget for it. For normal non budding growth I just use Arizona best 10-10-10 spring and fall, and every month add onetablespoon of miracle grow to the liquid solution. When plants first go in they get a tablespoon to gallon saturation with Fertilome rooting hormone for the first 2 months once every 7 to 10 days. If plants make it through first year, they get 1 bag of mushroom compost , 1 bag steer manure and 2 bags of western shredded cedar bark as a 4-6 inch mulch. I know this seems expensive but I budget for it because Arizona gets hotter and drier every year so I try to keep watering to once a week from Oct to March and then twice a week from April to September. I do not use drip although I could , I use the deep watering but fewer times approach, to prevent over heated over wet root rot, for a lot of plants watering in DEC to FEB can be reduced to about once every 2-3 weeks. I know my process is extreme that is why I budget for it or else I will lose plant,s in Arizona timing and shade are everything for 1-4 year old plants. I know this is more than you wanted but I did not want to answer the Dr. Earth question out of context of the whole process. They are all great and easy to use. All the formulas I have used have their patented TruBiotic which contains microbes that plants need to thrive. The measurements are easy too. No matter which formula you are using, it's 2 tablespoons per 1 gallon of medium or soil. I use it dry to top dress my plants. I am using 3 gallon pots so that means I need 6 TBS per pot. Doesn't get much simpler than that. On day 25 after starting these plants, I used 2 TBS of this Bud and Bloom, and 4 TBS of Dr. Earth All Purpose 4-4-4. On day 40, since they were starting to flower, I adjusted my ratio to 4 TBS of this Flower Girl and 2 TBS of Dr. Earth Tomato Vegetable and Herb formula 4-6-3. They have a formula for whatever you're growing, from fruit trees, to palms to roses. And almost all of them have the TruBiotic in them containing the beneficial microbes and mycorrhizae. I have not found any other fertilizer that contains the mycorrhizae and if you have to buy it separately, it's very expensive, and it's another thing to have to measure and mix. It's much easier to scoop out a tablespoon of Dr. Earth.
