By showcasing 65 small homes from around the world, Kahn shows that if you are willing to think seriously about what makes a good life and a happy home--and are willing to do some of the work yourself--you can live very well for a whole lot less. As a start, think outside the 2500 sq. ft. box that most Americans buy into, then consider this: in the 1950s, the average home for a family of four was 1100 sq.ft.Most of the structures in Small Homes range from 400 to 1200 sq.ft. and, judging from the obvious delight of the folks building and living in these homes, they're on to something good. From New Zealand to New Mexico, Brooklyn to British Columbia, San Francisco to Scotland, we see houses crafted from stone and earth and salvaged wood and straw bale, by people of every age, gender, hue and calling.
