Material is not paper. It is a rigid fibrous fabric material. Shade is pleated. Does have strings song sides but they are hidden behind the inner frame that encloses the top, bottom and sides of shade. And yes, one must step outside to open or close the shade because of screen door. It's not a big deal. We put up in morning, we close except a couple inches at night and close completely when in storage **Q: How thick does the door need to be? i have a diy door so it is not a standard rv door.** A: The aluminum extrusion frame around the door is approximately 1 1/2" nominal 1/16" thick so I ESTIMATE the actual door thickness at 1 3/8". **Q: My current window does not have screws. Will this window work** A: As long as it’s the same size window. The new one screws to itself. Tip: the old one can be removed with several pop sickle sticks to help with the tabs. Check YouTube out for better idea. Most install this window upside down so you Can open it from the top down **Q: For anyone that bought this, how easily does the shade slide up and down?** A: The shade itself has guide strings on each side and is held in place by the two bezels along with the window glass. It slides easily up and down and does not kink or fold irregularly.
