Since we only use the solar water between May and October I do take the insulation off for the winter. Also while the insulation is on the water heater we put a large heavy duty black construction drum liner bag over the insulation. This prevents the birds from pecking at the shinning silver insulation and also keeps it waterproof. During the summer months this method keeps the water very hot. But the "kit" is little more than a roll of mylar bubble-wrap and some foil tape that can both be bought at a home supply place for less.
