What I've done is take a black permanent marker and put lines on the sight glass housing in 1/2 inch increments starting 3/4 inch below the top rounded opening of the sight glass. At the top line mark "F" meaning full. Every 1/2 inch increment equals 1 cup of water. If the water is down 5 marks add 5 cups of water.to the upper reservoir. If you mark your sight glass like this you won't be guessing how much water to refill. KEEP IN MIND...I have a TRAVEL BERKEY. The Big Berkey and other Berkey sizes will probably have different inch marking increments...such as 3/8 inch per 1 cup of water. You should put masking tape on the sight glass housing and get accurate increment measurements before using the marker on the aluminum.
