It has much in common with Wender's "Wings of Desire," in that a city is as much a star of the film as the actors. In this case, the eerie and haunting streets of Sicily's capital, Palermo. Another thing in common with "Wings" is the prominence given to music. I remember seeing "Wings of Desire" twenty years ago and knowing immediately afterward I would have to get the soundtrack. It was the same with this film.By the way, it's a little tricky figuring out how to get the English subtitles and dialogue to come on (because the on-screen menus are in German). It helps to know this - you don't just click on "yes" and immediately return to the top menu. You have to keep clicking through until you are taken back to the top menu automatically. Hopefully this makes sense. ### ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ Five Stars *by J***. on Reviewed in the United Kingdom on November 24, 2015* DVD ### ⭐⭐ Sentimentaler Sumpf trotz interessanten Plots *by N***E on Reviewed in Germany on September 21, 2017* Auch wenn ich Wim Wenders sehr schätze: dieser Film hat auf mich streckenweise die Anmutung von sentimentalem Altmännerkitsch, obwohl Campino engagiert spielt und der Plot interessant ist. Mich hat der Film auch persönlich sehr interessiert, weil ich selbst eine Krise mit der digitalen Bilderflut hatte und auch wieder verstärkt zur langsamen, bedachten Analogfotografie zurückgekehrt bin (bin allerdings nur Amateurfotograf). In dieser Zeit habe ich den Film zum ersten Mal gesehen. Da Wenders überdies ein großartiger Fotograf von Weltrang ist, waren meine Erwartungen vielleicht etwas zu hoch aufgehängt. Und dann noch die Besetzung - neben Campino die Legende Dennis Hopper... wow!Doch gerade Hopper als Tod kommt irgendwie peinlich rüber. In der Schlüsselszene gestikuliert er wie ein billiger Stummfilm-Schauspieler herum, was den von ihm gespielten Tod unfreiwillig komisch macht, auch der Dialog ist dieser Szene ist unglücklich bedeutungsüberfrachtet. Das ist schon tragisch, wenn man bedenkt, dass Hopper zwei Jahre später gestorben ist. Meiner bescheidenen Meinung nach hätte er einen besseren Wenders zum Abschied verdient gehabt.Der Grat zwischen Kunst und Kitsch ist oft schmal. Hier hat Wenders leider die Balance verloren und ist in den Abgrund des Kitsches abgerutscht - finde ich jedenfalls.
