The water is absorbed by the exposed wick at one end, travels inside the covering and drips out of the exposed inner wick at the other; it does not come out of the length, although the length does become slightly damp. I did not need to, but I suspect you could loop the damp cord around the base of the plant. If you need a greater discharge, expose a longer length of wick at the end(s) or use a second length of cord. If you need a lesser discharge, shorten the length of exposed wick or tie a knot in the cord !The reservoir container can be below the level of the receiving pot but not by much. Mine is level with the top of a 3" deep plant pot and I have had no problems with it drawing water from the bottom of the reservoir to the top of the plant-pot. It will draw water up as well as across but probably not up great distances. You cannot daisy-chain these, one cord for each plant pot.
