They are steady lights. If they are twinkling, maybe check the place your light is absorbing sun . **Q: What is their lifespan excluding batteries?** A: Mine last about a year before they go dead. New batteries don't work. **Q: None of the lids will go on right and one does not work. How do I contact seller?** A: My lids went on right. but two didn’t work. I complained thru Amazon to seller and they wanted me to send all twelve back BUt I already had them hanging up high in backyard trees with 12’ ladders. so I never got them replaced. **Q: Are the solar inserts permenantly attached to the lid part, would I be able to take apart to spray paint the metal?** A: They do appear to be permanently attached. That is good though because there is a good seal around around the top of the solar cell and lid. In the hardest of rains, they have stayed bone dry inside.
