Yes, the stakes are plastic but so are most stakes of solar lights - just need to soften ground with a little water if it's too hard. The light leaves a little "starburst" on the ground and has a unique look with a brighter sparkle at both the top of the glass and the bottom. They are solar so they cast about as much light as previous solar lights I have had - more for ambiance than "lighting up the road". I ordered the box of 12 and have had no problems with any of them - in fact even the ones that are in partial shade are still lighting up until at least midnight (not sure how much longer because I'm in bed after that!). I also made sure I charged them for 3 days in bright sun as instructed before putting them out in the yard. Review: BREAK EASILY - Breaks easily during installation. 50% of them broke. The part that goes on the grass breaks easily when inserting it into the grass. Do not recommend them unless they make it out of metal or another harder material. I have them just in my floor beds and they look great. I would have given 5 stars but two of these barely light. I've had them a few weeks and have moved them around to make sure they are getting optimal sun but two do not work. I have contacted the company and they are working with me to have the two replaced.
