The professional technician has no means to effectively compress the hydraulically activated belt tensioner without spending additional time removing engine components. These popular engines can be found in 1995 and later T-100, Tacoma and 4 Runner trucks. In operation this tool is placed between the belt tensioner and the water pump pulleys.Then by slowly turning the tools inner nut, pressure is applied to the hydraulic tensioner pushing it into a position that allows the technician to place the supplied locking pin into the hydraulic piston push rod. Once the locking pin is in place the tensioner compressor can be removed and the timing belt placed on all appropriate pulleys. Eliminates the need to remove the timing belt tensioner from the vehicle to compress it. After changing my belt and partially re-assembling the engine to check my timing marks I found that I was one tooth off on both cams. So I got to do it all over again! Without this tool I would still be cursing.One important note about using the tool: Be patient! You have to allow the oil to bleed off the tensioner, so just take it really easy during the compression. I would turn the nut on the tool about a half turn, then wait about 30 seconds, then another turn. Use the locking pin to feel for the hole in the tensioner shaft as you compress the tensioner. Be patient and you'll be rewarded with a successful belt change. ### ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ Good Tool *by H***X on Reviewed in the United States on March 20, 2011* Bought this tool for changing out the water pump and timing belt on a 3.4 v6 in a 1999 4runner. Worked great once i figured out what was going on. Like others commented, the tool can come apart on you. It has about 10 threads before it comes apart. At first i was maxing out at the 10th thread and unable to get the pin to slide through. Later, i found out i was completely missing the hole in the tensioner rod with the included locking pin. I had to rotate the tensioner rod with some vice grips so that the hole lined up with the hole in the tensioner for the pin. Afterwards, I counted 8 threads at which point the pin went through the ram on the tensioner.
