The important thing is that if you don't want this to be permanent, you need to find an object with a surface that the cat likes even better to scratch on and use the time to train him (use treats) to use it. Also, location is key. Cats naturally want to scratch things that stick out into the room or walkways. Put your object there at first and when he is using it well, gradually move it to a more acceptable long-term location, like a corner or wall. We tried all kinds of scratching posts and pads and finally realized that our cat greatly prefers a thick cotton bathroom mat or towel. So we just gave up and found one that doesn't look too bad in our living room! Shows fingerprints very easily and the pins that come with it… What am I supposed to do with these pins? I cannot use for intended purpose with these cork screw pins.
