The IPad sits inside a plastic case that snaps around it. Then a fitted rubber cover envelopes it. The screen is open but, I have put the glass by Zagg over it. I bout a pimular one for my 5 year old two christmases two years ago when he was 3. We have had some temper tantrums and drops and I have had no issues with it’s protective ability. I think this is a very good product and it will protect your device with reasonable drops and accidents. I do t think it would hold up if you dropped it out of a car but n the highway or ran over it. I've already dropped my iPad since buying it, and it protected it wonderfully. My one and only complaint is that the (locking) kickstand is positioned in such a way that the iPad tilts back a little too far when I'm trying to watch something, unless I'm standing above it.
