I washed them before putting them on the bed. There was no pilling. I do not feel they are "stiff and scratchy" as stated in other reviews. They were slightly wrinkled after drying, but this does not bother me. The thickness and weight of the fabric is nice. They feel like much better quality than the Target sheets I purchased for a more expensive price. They stayed put on the bed after a night of sleeping, so the size is perfect. I was surprised to find 4 pillow cases included in the king set. The cases are made for king size pillows. We don't use that size, but I'm okay with extra fabric. I knocked off a star because of the color. I ordered gray, and these are definitely more of a tan color. Not a deal breaker for me, but I would've been frustrated had I bought them for a specific color scheme. I'm including a picture next to two pairs of the hubby's gray shorts so you can see the color difference I'm talking about. I'm still pleased with the quality and price. Through the washings they've held up nicely. I like the weight of them (not too thick or thin for me) and I also like the stripes in the weave of the fabric. The only reason I don't give them 5 stars is because the fitted sheet is a little big. Our mattress is really deep so I can't imagine there would be a mattress needing pockets as deep as this fitted sheet, so basically the fitted sheet doesn't fit as tightly as I like it. BUT I will buy these again when I need more sheets. I've tried lots of different types of sheets and these so far are my favorite. Just so you know I DON'T like very tight percale weaves, because they feel like silk to me. I don't like silk sheets or thin and slippery sheets. I like the sturdy cotton sheet. The sheets are stitched well, no fraying. They wash well with minimal ironing needed (some would say no ironing necessary, but I'm a stickler about that, especially the pillowcases). They fit great and have plenty of coverage on my very tall, padded mattress.
