I use them both for edge painting and also for painting inside of areas that I emboss in order to get better contrast. When using some of the colors on the surface, you may need to apply multiple coats to get even coverage, but that is pretty standard for any paint really. I have not had any issues with the paint flaking, although if you're applying it to leather with some finish coat, it is recommended that you remove the finish first and then refinish over top of the end product.
