No milk is used. The capsules are rotating as the coffee is being made which creates the crema which can look like foam from milk. **Q: Is it possible to make Latte and Cappuchino type coffees with this?** A: Yes, absolutely. The machine is different from the original Nespresso, in that the capsules are designed to make mugs and grande (tall) coffees, rather than espressos. I generally just had 1/4 milk to a grande capsule and have myself a nice strong latte. If you want to texturise the milk then sure, you'll need a frother of some sort (Nespresso do a very nice, but very expensive barister milk prepper) but I haven't bottered to date.
