Send them back as it is clearly a manufacturing fault. **Q: What is the best magnification/aperture for watching kids surfing out back?** A: Assuming your holding by hand a 6x or 8x zoom is fine for close-up at a couple of 100m or so, so that’s what I would go for, anything more powerful will make it both harder for you to find the subject when looking through dues to the small field of view and hard to get a steady picture due to natural shake of your hand. At that distance a 42mm aperture will be more than sufficient for usual daytime use, but if you wanted you could go to 30mm with good quality binocs and not notice any loss of picture.
