The single top cover ( for the whole box) lifts out completely. **Q: Could you please tell me the size of the 5 compartments?** A: 1st compartment (marked morning) is 24.5mm long x 34mm wide x 20mm deep. The bottom of all compartments are half moon shaped.The other 4 compartments are the same size - 20mm L x 34mm W x 20mm DThese are all internal dimensions. **Q: Do the daily boxes come out so that I can take just that day's pills with me when out in the day?** A: Yes. The tray is a holder for the week, but each day's compartment is separate and portable. I bought one for my dad as he has MS and takes up to 20 tablets/capsules four times a day. All fit into place perfectly with enough room left over if he has any more to take. The sliding door also enables easy access compared to other products that use a tight latch, which even I found frustrating at times, let alone a 60 year old man! All boxes are nicely labelled and the fact they appear as different colours for different days, not only add to the visual appeal of the product, they also help ensure that my dad doesn't mistake today's medicine for tomorrow's. All in all it's a great product that does what is intended. In fact I wrote this review solely because I bought a second one for my mum who recently went through a heart operation and is on a number of different tablets for life.
