They'd clearly been in storage for some time, and the leather had set like stone; I couldn't even open them to try them on at first for fear of the tongue cracking.I washed them in warm water, and warmed them with a hairdryer (from the inside so as to avoid force drying the leather), and began to get a little movement back. I then conditioned the boots with Alt-Berg Leder-Gris Xtreme which softened them up significantly.After the conditioning, I applied this thick and goopy wax with a stiff (black bristles) boot brush, working in circles, being sure to get it into the seams, nooks and crannies. It takes a fair amount of working before it begins to smooth out, but by the time it does, the wax has bonded with the leather nicely to form a substantial layer of protection.It will buff to a hazy shimmer - not a shine - and looks smart, but it's the weatherproofing performance that stands out.Walking through long wet grass will usually highlight any weakness on your boot's defenses; even where these war torn boots are literally torn (there's a little cracking around the toes on one boot), not even a hint of moisture gets through!Even with my trousers soaked to the point where water is running out the hems onto the boots, my feet remain dry.This of course isn't going to last forever, and eventually water will penetrate, but for the benefit of not having hot, sweaty feet inside Gore Tex or rubber boots, I gladly accept a little dampness in the most extreme conditions.With regular use, the reapplication of a fresh coat requires only a little polish, so this 80g tin will last far longer then the boots.For a few reasons beyond the scope of this review, I won't be investing in more Defenders, but for leather care, I will be using Leder-Gris from now on. It's very good stuff. ### ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ wax on.... dry feet *by A***D on 17 July 2016* bought this after reading many good reviews on various forum sites.... I very rarely use polish tending to stick with wax products such as Renapur or Grangers as was told many moons ago this was the best way to care and waterproof boots, whilst not damaging stitching etc... with my boots my footwear beig used mainly for work (safety boots) or tramping around the Welsh countryside with my dogs I don't require a shine, but do like to keep the tootsies dry... as this product has been developed by a boot manufacturer, whom not only sell quality hiking boots, but also have the military contract it's gotta be half decent ( or at least should be)as the instructions say apply to almost dry boots, I spritzed mine with water and loosely dried, applied using a small shoe brush and worked well into the leather... (several pairs of differing age), and left them overnight before inspecting... all of the results have been the same, the boots have a dull sheen as opposed to a shine, but they haven't been buffed off, most of the product does seem to be absorbed, and all of the boots are covered in a lovely waxy layer, the only way to describe is it is the same feel as when new out of the box... I ran a tap over the toe on one of the boots and the water just ran off, leaving just 1 or 2 very small beads... much in the same way a freshly polished / waxed car would look..... did a short walk in our British summer weather, through some very wet 6" grass and the results were the same...... will try a longer walk today, but so far so good, and certainly no worst than my other favoured products.... unsure on the longevity or how often it would need re-applying as only time and weather conditions will tell......
