It opens so it’s easy to wash.When cutting herbs just go both directions with twisting the handle, more clock wise but anti clock wise too. And it’s easy.Cool is just to mill above the saucepan while cooking or on the food on the plate directly.It looks a bit on a soft side but it actually not soft. It was an waste of cash for me. The construction is thin pressed metal that twists and bends every time you turn the handle, if you rotate the handle clockwise the top comes off spreading the contents everyehere as it does not fasten securely, rotating it Anticlockwise sort of works but it hurts to hold it and you need an extra hand to press the contents down (not very safe!) or else the thing won't shred and the tines just rotate in empty space. My mum had one in her kitchen drawer and it was sturdily made and worked every time, a child could use it, this one is more of an ornament.
