    even Maggie has her moments…

I really enjoyed this one, if only because that almost impermeable control of Maggie as a professional clashed heavily with her love for a child she had basically raised from his birth and the right thing to do for the difficult one in her care.It was very human of her to find it so difficult to do the right thing and hesitate; it gave her depth and we got to see it’s not always easy to do the right thing even for carers who have almost seen it all.Thank goodness for her support network; that Vicky always comes through when you need her! She’s a great supporting ‘character’, too.To the story itself; you feel for Kirsty even if you want to shake some sense into her first then show her that she isn’t unlovable the next because you feel so sorry for her…The way her emotions and words tumble all over the place and out of control was very well-written and believable. I liked how the whole difficult, often long and frustrating, process of her dealing with her rejection was portrayed.Glad she had a happy ending and well done, Maggie. It was worth it in the end.

These books are impossible to put down - I would definitely recommend. What a very hard decision had to be made during this one, but a positive outcome. The amount of work foster carers put in - homeschooling, getting up in the middle of the night, lengthy school runs, hosting meetings at home, regular trips to school when things wrong, keeping daily logs etc whilst juggling the needs of more than one child and running their own household - it really is incredible work and their insight, experience & expertise should be taken into account all the time, especially when making major decisions about the children in their care.Maggie makes a point of mentioning several times how this young girl struggles to cope with change, and her emotions change quickly and frequently, also she's very literal/outspoken - her communication is different. So if you know anything about ASD you may have these bells were ringing in your head; as a mother of a young adult with Asperger's Syndrome (their diagnosis and chosen kept terminology) I would've liked to see at least a referral or some process of thinking of why neurodiversity may have been a significant contributing factor here, although I've no experience in fostering and clearly there would be other things going on for this young lady. There's an incident in a supermarket (supercharged places - I'm sure staff have seen it all!), in which Maggie would like a badge saying that she's a foster carer, which is understandable, however I worry a little that this could push blame onto parents or previous carers for a child who may have social and/or emotional difficulties - hopefully people know enough about this these days not to judge in any case, including parents who do all the right things & still have age-atypical The more people who read books like these, the better everyone's understanding will be. There's news towards the end of the book given by the social worker which I feel could have been broken in a much more broken down, gradual, with-notice way, because children who struggle with change often find it really helpful to have notice, and to use wording which doesn't give them an unexpected emotional shock. But nevertheless these people are doing incredible things, often underfunded and against all the odds. I really hope everything worked out very well for this amazing young lady as she moved into her teens and adult life. Maggie provided phenomenal support which would have made all the difference for a very positive outcome.
