## Description

From the manufacturer Gloom 2nd Edition Gloom 2nd Edition is out! Second edition titles for the Gloom game line include the core game, Unhappy Homes, Unfortunate Expeditions, and Unwelcome Guests. The Game of Inauspicious Incidents and Grave Consequences by Atlas Games. In the Gloom card game, you assume control of the fate of an eccentric family of misfits and misanthropes. The goal of the game is sad, but simple: you want your characters to suffer the greatest tragedies possible before passing on to the well-deserved respite of death. You'll play horrible mishaps like Pursued by Poodles or Mauled by a Manatee on your own characters to lower their Self-Worth scores, while trying to cheer your opponents' characters with marriages and other happy occasions that pile on positive points. The player with the lowest total Family Value wins. The Cards Printed on transparent plastic cards, Gloom features an innovative design by noted RPG author Keith Baker. Multiple modifier cards can be played on top of the same character card; since the cards are transparent, elements from previously played modifier cards either show through or are obscured by those played above them. You'll immediately and easily know the worth of every character, no matter how many modifiers they have. You've got to see (through) this game to believe it! Changes to the Second Edition Here's a rundown on what's new in the second edition releases New Features Backwards compatibility is completely maintained between editions. You can use second edition expansions with your original edition core game, and vice versa. The second edition core game has a sturdy new telescoping box, while second edition expansions have double-width tuckboxes. Timing icons in the style of Cthulhu Gloom and Unquiet Dead are incorporated throughout the second edition releases. Rules cards and icon reminder cards are included in each second edition set for easy reference. The card list, and the effect texts of individual cards, have been polished for a better play experience. For example, complex cards like 'Body Thief,' and cards with delayed effects, have been removed. Three Modifiers have been turned into Transformations in Unwelcome Guests 2nd Edition. Residences and Mysteries have been reworked in the second edition so that you can no longer end up with unusable cards in your hand. All the Story icons and a few family icons in the second edition have been redrawn by artist Todd Remick. Event cards in the second edition have a centre illustration and a blank icon in the top right spot, to give them the same silhouette as a Death card. 'Pathos Points' are now called 'Self-Worth Points,' to avoid unnecessary proliferation of game terms. A number of mechanical changes have been made in the rule sheet. For example, timing icons, symbols on Event cards, and the new discard rule have been accounted for.

Review: Nice cards and funny stories - The game is played with a certain macabre sense of humour. In that the goal is to inflict misery on your family, then kill them whilst sprinkling joy on others. The cards are generally alliterative and have a humorous quote on them. Half the fun is creating a story that links any previous cards with your current action to create a narrative. The game design is also nice, in that cards that benefit you (depress your family) require a sacrifice on your behalf, whilst those that hurt other players (making their family happy) gives them some extra cards. And the cards are transparent making them have overlapping(or not) effects that can sometimes cancel the previous layers/grant a bonus on death. A nice game to play if you have 15 to 20 mins and fancy some strategy mixed in with silly storytelling. Works well with 2 players.
Review: Fantastic fun! - I bought this as a present for a family member, and we had such a great time playing it. The cards all have beautiful artwork on them and it was surprisingly easy to play, the game encourages you to create a story around these characters based on how the game plays which creates some very entertaining tales being spun. Really great fun for the family!
