They have no smell at all and the rattle is very light and soothing. Not something that will drive me crazy if shaken all day by my toddler, Not loud and harsh. I did record shaking a few. The sounds are pretty similar, but my 6 and 1 year olds will not care. I got these to put in my 1 year olds Easter basket, as he loves to shake things. He doesn't need 6 of them so my daughter will get some as well. She will also love to shake them. The seller sent me a cute note and a little surprise, which was nice.
