Review: AN EXCELLENT PRODUCT VERY HIGH QUALITY I am very by this ... - AN EXCELLENT PRODUCT VERY HIGH QUALITY I am very by this item excellent recording very reliable must read manual. The quality recording is excellent and can be easily read by pc. The HDMI IN AND OUT VERY RELIABLE. EXCELLENT MENU AND INTERFACE. The material recorded on PC cannot be read on the machine. There is editing facility and you can record full movie without being divided into 5 files as other HDMI RECORDERS. This was a big bonus to me as I tried other HDMI recorders and they divide the movie to 6 files and to edit to 1 movie is big pain. Ithink this AVERMEDIA IS EXCELLENT MACHINE AT VERY GOOD PRICE THANKS AVERMEDIA
Review: Recording of HDCP content with Avermedia ER130 - The device is intended for recording gameplay videos from a PS3 / PS4 / XBox etc as it connects via HDMI and has a HDMI pass-through port for connection to your TV / Monitor. I did not purchase the device for this reason as like many people out there, I wished to make copies of HD broadcast / HD recordings on my satellite set-top box, since while you can record onto a DVD using a DVD/HDD recorder via. SCART- the content will be recorded in standard definition and to boot such recorders normally use composite video for the video signal which is poor and results in a soft/fuzzy display on modern full HD capable displays. There is no "off the shelf" solution to recording HD content from your set-top box as the manufacturers encrypt the video using HDCP, which allows content to only be viewed on display devices ie. a TV or a monitor. There-in lies the problem- HDCP encryption is applied by most HDMI sources such as a Sky+ HD box... The Avermedia ER130 will not allow for the recording of HDCP encrypted content (No matter which version of the firmware you load), which would ordinarily render the device useless as far as using it as a modern day VCR for recording your TV programs... However there is a work around... I purchased a HDMI splitter (iSolem 2 Way HD splitter) in the belief that this would strip HDCP as per some of the review- IT DOES NOT. Likewise the device itself warns you that you've connected it to a splitter so far from it- splitters sold on desertcart and the like in the UK will pass on the HDCP encryption. Though I still use it, as on output is fed to my AV receiver to enjoy full quality sound the other output of the splitter is fed into equipement will convert the signal to analogue and back again thereby stripping the HDCP. The conversion involves the use of: 1 x HDMI -to- RGB Component box (https://www.desertcart.co.uk/gp/product/B00A8FIQXA/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_asin_title_o01_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1) 1 x RGB Video Cable with Stereo Audio (https://www.desertcart.co.uk/gp/product/B01D5H8C4K/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_asin_title_o01_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1) 1 x RGB Component -to- HDMI box (https://www.desertcart.co.uk/gp/product/B0088HO1UC/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_asin_title_o01_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1) Its a bit of a clunky work around - but it works- very well, especially for the purposes of recording things off say a Sky+ HD box. The Sky+ HD box even on HDMI maxes out a 1080i resolution in any case, which consequently is the maxium resolution supported using analogue RGB a.k.a Component connections. On older Sky+ HD Boxes there are RGB/Component connections on the back of the box (Red, Green and Blue) - not to be confused with the inferior Composite output (Yellow RCA/phono socket). So when fed into the Avermedia ER130 in this way, it completely bypasses the quite frankly stupid and irritating HDCP nonsense and allows you to make copies of broadcast and recorded content like you did before using a VCR/VHS Tape back in the day- except now your recordings will be full HD at the same quality as the Sky Box itself - with the exception that the audio would be stereo and not multi-channel if the broadcast was originally multi-channel; not really a big deal to be honest! The industry frowns on this, but I don't see how recording HD broadcast content is any different to when TV was recording onto VHS tapes and later HDD's / DVDs?! Especially when you may want to make a copy of a news broadcast, or TV program that will not be aired again in the foreseable future! The above work around was an inconvience and additional expense but was not the cause of the device to loose 1 star on its review. No, this was caused by compatibility with recording media... There is no storage on this device, so you'll need a USB hardrive (External HDD or SSD). I tried using a USB 3.0 Thumb Drive (32Gb) but despite the device only having a USB 2.0 port it stated that the thumb drive was not fast enough and refused to record- despite its actual transfer rates being faster than USB 2.0. So I had to purchase an external HD (https://www.desertcart.co.uk/gp/product/B01GQPXBQC/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_asin_title_o00_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1). With the External SSD drive attached (Also USB 3.0) recording was possible and I am pleased with the quality and performance of the video recording. It will also work with a traditional mechanical hardrive connected via USB, I just went for the SSD as the device will be repeatidly removed and transported I like the fact that SSDs are more protected against shock / rough handling, in addition to being much faster when transferring recordings. In terms of recording Full HD content at 1080i, there were three options available and the data used for a test recording is as possible. BEST - Works out to be 108 Megabytes per minute of video FINE - 90 Megabytes per minute of video GOOD - 72 Megabytes per minute of video. To be honest with a recording off a HD TV channel, there was little discernable difference between BEST and GOOD when recording at 1080i, so it would be a question on how much storage space you have and the importance of the recording. Nonetheless, the setting is easy to change in the settings. I found on mine that a watermark was added to the videos- this too can also be disabled in the settings giving you a nice clean recording. Once you get the device connected and working as described above it can be considered as a modern replacement for the venerabel VCR / DVD recorder! It just takes some additional cost/eqipment to do so, and I would that this would be the case for other so called "Game capture" devices whether they be stand alone of linked to your PC/Mac as the HDCP encryption will always scupper them when used on their own.

## Questions & Answers

**Q: I want to connect to my cable tv receiver (record tv program). My receiver hdmi signal has hdcp protection and will not be able to record. Is true ?**
A: IMHO in 2018: I am thinking that if you are getting a digital RF TV signal from any source and you want to record it ,you should be able to do so by first connecting that digital RF signal to a digital to analog converter box (Remember 2008 when Govt sponsored them?). Then you should be able to record whatever as an analog recording with an old analog recorder (Ebay). The quality is good enough for me. And the old Magnavox / Philips recorders take a digital signal (without any external converter) and record them as analog with 720P resolution (good enough for me). However, I don't know how your TV set gets its signal from cable box, whether it is delivered as a digital RF signal or via HDMI cable. I don't know why anyone gets cable now anyway, since I put an antenna farm on my roof to get direct broadcast TV in better quality than cable; and YouTube on internet has more video to watch than lifetime ability to watch. & Youtube can be downloaded.

**Q: Will it work with Roku?**
A: I use this device to work around copyrighted material. Any time you use HDMI the Copy write code is passed throughAnd yes the Avermedia EZ Recorder is a good choice, but still allows for HDMI copy write inputI use the Hauppauge HD PVR 2 which has component inputsBy using this HDMI to compnent the copywrite protection is lost and you can recordhttps://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00N9UEVNK/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o01_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1

**Q: It's supposed to take a 2tb drive. why does it not recognize my wd mybook? It's turned on before I start the Avermedia**
A: Any HDD larger than 2TB is usually formatted using a GPT system (not MBR). The original ER130 could not recognize GPT-system HDs. It would call for you to format the HD using an HP USB formatting utility (available on AverMedia's FAQ page), but that would reduce your 4TB to less than 2TB--because of partitions. HOWEVER, in late 2017, AverMedia issued an ER130 firmware upgrade that allowed for GPT-system HDs. Go to their Download page for the ER130 and get the firmware update. Expand the contents and load the resulting .bin file to a thumb-drive, then plug that into the ER130's USB port. Run the firmware update.

**Q: Im looking to cut cable and go to streaming. Will this device, will it work on, sling, playstation vue, ext.?**
A: Yes, you can record the output of such devices. As noted by someone else, you will need a "splitter" to record an HDCP copy protected signal. The splitter will remove that signal protection. See other comments in the questions and answers about what to buy. I've posted that I use the SANOXY® HDMI 1x2 3D splitter purchased here to solve that problem. I don't know why one answer to this question said you have to buy a 2TB drive. That's not true. The box is capable of accepting an *up to* 2TB 2.5 inch laptop hard drive which can be installed internally but you can also be of any size 2TB or smaller. Keep in mind that the box requires that the drive be formatted for NTFS and that may be a challenge if you're not technically inclined. The box accepts externally attached USB storage as well. Again, it must be NTFS formatted but that would be far easier with an external USB drive.
