I bought these for this purpose with this question still ambiguous and Iā€™m back to say it can definitely store flour or any other small/ground grain. Transferring from the bag to a jar is a bit tricky and I usually use a big funnel. **Q: How many normal sized apples fit in a bag? Bag must be able to close. Don't answer "I don't know".** A: Buy some and test it yourself. Mine fit 11 Red Delicious, 16 little Cripps Pinks, 9 Granny Smiths and 23 Arkansas Black. That's all we have on hand right now. **Q: Are these made of organic cotton or not?** A: Nice attention to detail as far as packaging although I didn't get the cute little fawn and flowers as pictured, but no big deal :) Absolutely NO indication or information anywhere about this being "organic" cotton other than the mention in this listing. I searched quite a bit online and have found no information abut the manufacturer's dedication or pride in their product at all. No little note about the fabric being organic as what usually comes with true organic products. The price is unusually low for "organic" cotton, too. I bought these to use for potatoes and onions (keeping potatoes in the dark encourages them to last soooo much longer and I'm tired of using cardboard boxes. As with all things I buy that will touch skin or food, I'll wash them first. The bags' tags say nothing but the logo and seller name. The seller website is nothing but computer desktops, laptops, electronics and the seller's AmazonStore is a hodgepodge of a few plastic toys, a few craft supply items. The bags have a distinct odor that true organic cotton doesn't have, so it's definitely been treated with something. The smell reminds me of Disneyland (sounds weird, but it's true :D ) and also printed cotton bedspreads made in India - I always assumed it was the ink or dye, but I don't know what it is. The bags are well constructed and the drawstrings are woven cotton as opposed to synthetic sometimes used in other lesser-quality bags. I used them instead of the thin mesh type bags to wash smaller items, even the dogs collars and leashes. I really like using cotton bags, and also wanted bags that had a double drawstring to make securing the top before tossing into the washer easier.These are a very good size. They went through their first wash and dry very well without shrinking up and they stayed nice and soft. However I am already down to just four bags, my husband happened to see them as I pulled them out of the dryer and decided to claim one for himself for small garage things. :(These bags seem to be well made, have so far washed and dried well, and are just the right size for keeping smaller/delicate items protected during the wash and dry cycle.
