This mat is very well made and has a decent length cord. It laid flat without any problems after a short warm up time and has been a blessing to my early gardening start here in New England. I started my seeds using this mat and had growth within 3 days. I'm using a 72 celled starting tray with a sub tray and clear cover. I was concerned about the space between the sub-tray and the sprouting cell tray and questioned if it would work as well as I wanted it to ... but no problem. I used peat pods and watered them once, ... (this unit is in a closed off room where the temperature isn't over 45 degrees) and I know the pad is putting out heat simply by the condensation I get when the cover is on the tray. Without this pad, ... my seedlings would still be waiting top break ground. So far, (while paying attention to the humidity levels), ... no mold or damp off and the plants are doing great. I added the 2 foot Dirt Genius kick start lighting system as soon as the seedlings started to break ground and even with the cool temps in that room, things have been going great. "Dirt Genius" and VMInnovations are the way to go and I expect to be planting by early May my cool weather crops. I'd certainly recommend this seedling mat to anyone wishing to get a jump start on planting. Excellent item! ### ⭐⭐⭐⭐ Good mat, but you really need the thermostat too *by R***S on Reviewed in the United States on June 13, 2014* You are able to use this mat without a thermostat but it didn't work so well for me. I created a germination rack and so I needed 6 separate mats. Some mats got so hot they actually started to have the "melted-plastic" smell and I had to unplug them. Others didn't heat up enough to make any difference between the mat and room temperature. As soon as I spent the money and bought thermostats for them, they all worked perfectly. I was able to specify exact germination temps and my germination percentage success rate increased. I found that putting a towel between the mat and the seeds (when using the paper-towel/baggie method) worked better than placing the baggie directly on the mat.It's really too bad that they don't design these mats with an adjustable thermostat in them already. That would earn 5 stars. ### ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ not bad, seems fine *by B***O on Reviewed in the United States on January 11, 2014* I plugged it in using the heat mat thermostat. At first it's really hard to tell if it's working because it takes about a half hour to really get up to temperature which isn't a big deal. The thermostat i bought reads the temperature digitally and has reached temps as high as 87 so the mat is apparently putting out heat. The mat instructions says it's designed for use with thermostat, so i would recommend this mat and buy the thermostat for best results.
