It is very much like a felt pen with a flat sided nib. It applies the colour evenly and easily, although you need a steady hand so you draw a nice clean line around the edge of your lips and then fill in the lips completely. I had a bright red one and it is vibrant and long lasting . It leaves your lips very dry though so once the lip ink dried completely I applied a thin layer of clear balm which worked a treat. Colour stays on even when you eat, although I found with greasy food you do need to touch up a little bit (maybe if you don't use balm it might be better, but overall I prefer the feel of it with balm and touching up was very easy).
