Any of these can be used to stop the treadmill. But note, it doesn't make a dead stop. It will still roll to a stop. So if your dog fell on its side or to its belly, it would likely just slide off the back of the machine as the belt came to a stop. My dog actually dismounts this way standing up...letting the belt ride him off the machine backwards...and not just when stopping it, but at any speed. So I just put a rubber mat behind the machine so that he has traction on his feet when he dismounts. You could put a slim pet bed, blanket, or pillow there to catch your dog should s/he fall down and slide off the machine. The distance from the belt to the floor is only 4 inches... I can't imagine your dog would be injured in any way -- with or without cushioning. Dogs play a lot harder than that! Also note, there is an eye hook on the front orange bar. You can use this hook to attach a short lead to your dog's collar. This would then prevent your dog from sliding off the treadmill should it fall, the belt would just keep running under it's body until your dog got back up on its feet or you pressed the stop button. Finally, note, the speed starts at 1 mph. That's very slow, so if your dog fell and slid of at the starter speeds, it would be equivalent to the dog rolling over in bed in terms of impact. In fact, at the starter speeds, my dog can place his paws on the orange front bar, stand on his hind legs and "walk" upright -- it's that slow. And even at speeds up to 4 mph, my dog can jump right onto the running treadmill...even from the sides -- up and over the side bars. I think it's a very safe product and dogs quickly adapt. Unless you have a dog with balance issues, I don't think you'd have any safety problems. Your dog just needs to understand how to adapt to the "ground" now moving under its feet!
