It's simple and has it's own rechargeable battery along with a bay for regular batteries. It picked up strong stations pretty well. The tuner , you can hear it step through the frequencies as you're turning the dial but it's ok. It's going to either pick up the station or it won't. I worried about how long it could go on a charge. SO I took all the batteries out of it and put it in the sunlight and on a very low volume, it'll operate from light alone. SO I'm guessing it's using just a little over a watt while it's operating at low volume. This was perfect for my camping set up as I had it going on super low volume on a local soft rock station for nearly all of the day. I put that at least at 18 hours at a time. I would recharge it with one of my power stations over night after bed. I never let it go completely dead so I can't say how long it owuld have gone. It's visually pleasing. It fit in my camping gear set up with no issues. All the little bits fold up nicely. I'm pretty happy about this little radio. I had wanted a stereo with the same kinda fit and finish but too much $ and no good reviews. This one is a thumbs up! Don't think you're getting some BOSE or something.
