He is big, and he is a good swimmer, but we live in a lake community and I insist all the kids wear some sort of float, so that if an emergency happens at least we can get to them!! The water is murky, so it is always a fear someone will slip under the surface. I tried to order the larger straps from the website, but the shipping for the straps plus the shipping cost more then the fin itself!!! I have a feeling this is the first step to swimming on his own.I wouldn't necessarily leave a child in the water all by him or herself with just this on, if he or she could not swim. It doesn't hold the head up or have safety straps like a light. This is not a life vest. This is a buoyant toy... Not unlike a noodle.
