If you are not a fiction fan, try some non-fiction. The EDGE series of books are a varied collection of titles that aim to capture reluctant young readers by concentrating on some of the less traditional subjects to write books on. Their mini set of sporting biographies called 'Sporting Heroes' are a great example of this as sports mad children are not always reading mad. You can use these books to try and harness their passion for sport into a passion for reading.The set has some mega name likes Ronaldo and Neymar. In the grand scheme of things Adam Peaty is not as well known, but he has already accomplished so much being an Olympic Gold medalist and multiple world record holder in breast stroke. Being Ronaldo may be a pipe dream, but Adam is a British sports person done well, so perhaps this book will inspire the next generation of Gold medalists?'Adam Peaty' has a stripped down quality to it and tells Adam's story from his childhood until his recent Olympic success. The book is part comic strip, part traditional story telling. The comic has a slightly heightened quality to it that takes some getting used to - it probably works better for the EDGE comic hero stories. Peaty himself does not look right until towards the end. The story is told simply, but in a way that will help develop language. Even as a person well passed the desired age for this book, I found the story of a boy that was scared of water, who went onto such success, fascinating.
