Review: Bad product - Put together and when I filled it with product the lever that releases the product on the bottom would not move. The wire is too fragile to open and shut the release door. Took all the product out and set the door, then the product fell through. Spreader is not a good buy. We live on a hill, just wondering if it’s easily flipped** A: It seems to be well built. Worked great for us. We did use it on a small slope and simply ran the lawn tractor up and down rather than crossway. But no experience on a serious hill. **Q: Where is it made? What country?** A: Made in Illinois, USA. **Q: Does this have plastic gears? I have read a lot about these and ones with plastic gears wear out quickly** A: No! The drive and the lever that sets the opening are metal. The covering over the metal is plastic to protect it from the elements. If I were allowed to take a picture and attach it, I would, it is NOT plastic. Most of the wear and tear parts are metal with the exception of the hopper, inflatable wheels, and the little fan that distributes the product from the hopper. The drive which determines how fast the little fan moves to distribute the product rotates based on the speed you are going. This is hooked to the same metal bar that rotates the wheels and then to the part that rotates the fan. I’m sure that I’m not using all the proper names because I’m not a mechanic, but hopefully this all is a non-techie view. The machine operates exceptionally well, and I can easily compare it to the ones costing $250 dollars. The mechanisms are all built the same with the exception of the hopper and the fan which distributes the production; in the $250 spreader these are metal. However, both still only spread 4’. If you spend more $400, you can get a spreader with an axial; this doesn’t have one! The wheels on this are big and far better than the $250 one I had! It fits the bill perfectly. The rubber tubed wheels appear more sturdy than plastic. Installation was sort of a pain, but the instructions are accurate. Assemblers will need two 7/16" ratchet drivers, or one and a 7/16" wrench. Also need needle nose pliers to spread the cotter pins. I needed needle nose vice grips to hold the tire tube inflation valve in place to air up the tires.
