I let it trail on the floor and work with her and she tends to step over it naturally to eliminate getting tangled up. Much better than just using a long lead and it means she doesn't react to any tension (for example the tension dogs feel through an extendable lead). I've also used it with a waist belt so I'm completely hands free.
