Review: Sushi Go! - Sushi Go! Is a simple set collecting card game that's great fun and suitable from about age 7 or 8 years old upwards. Sushi Go! is a set collecting, card drafting game. Each game consists of 3 rounds followed by final scoring. In each round a player is dealt a hand of sushi illustrated cards. Then each player simultaneously chooses a card and passes their hand to the player on the left - this is card drafting and it's a mechanic used in number of more complex games such as 7 Wonders - in fact, a lot of reviews talk about younger players learning the card drafting mechanic here as a stepping stone to playing 7 Wonders. All chosen cards are revealed simultaneously ... and you begin to get a glimpse of which sets of sushi cards a player may be collecting. Also, the card drafting gives a sense of a sushi conveyor belt, just take what you want from what's passing by. Players continue in this fashion until the hands have been played out. The completed sets are scored and two more rounds are played. The player with the most points gained over the 3 rounds wins. A scoring pad was included in the (Zoch Verlag, see below) edition that I own. The cards are well illustrated pieces of sushi and associated items - e.g. wasabi, chopsticks. The way each set is collected is differed: some reward single, or paired, or tripled cards, others are collected over all 3 rounds, others reward greater numbers, others reward most collected vs. other players, others allow the taking of two rather than one card on your turn (before being placed back into the had for another player to use on their turn). All in all - the set collecting variety works best when there are at least three players, or more, in the game. It's about 15 minutes for us to play out a full 3-round 3-player game. And we always play at least another game ... the one downside is that it requires a good shuffle to split out those sets again in between games! There are two versions of this game that I have seen for sale on desertcart - the Zoch Verlag edition (multi language rules in English, German, French and Italian) and the Gamewright edition (rules in English). There are a few rule tweaks in the Gamewright edition but nothing that really impacts game play. From memory - the only difference I can recall was that tied players with the most of something share the points in the Gamewright rules and tied players get the same bonus points in the Zoch Verlag rules. Also, the artwork is different and the card names are in German in the Zoch Verlag edition and in English in the Gamewright edition. With a bit of effort using Google / boardgamegeek / eBay, you may find the "Sushi Go! Soy Sauce" promotional cards that match your edition and add this 4-card variant to the game. I did, and the Soy Sauce cards give you points for the most number of coloured sets you have played in a round. For what it provides: a simple, portable, quick, fun, set collecting game it does the job well and we've got a lot out of our copy.
