I own solitary Japanese and German carbon steel knives that are worth $400 or more. Reason? Their build quality is superior, their performance unrivalled.I am also a vintage cast iron collector, particularly pre-war Griswold, a company known for their exceptional quality and, because they haven’t made them since the company folded in the late 1950’s, their collectibility. I recently paid over $300 for a Griswold #10 with heat ring (used to lock them in place on old wood-burning stovetops) from the early 1920’s because its manufacture is (a) Superior to what you find in modern (raw) cast iron skillets, and (b) Because it is an investment piece that WILL appreciate in value. I can already sell it and turn a profit. Though I won’t sell it because I use what I buy.So when I say that I am discerning, you can take me at my word.Now, you are after an enamelled cast iron pot, are you? Well, you will not find an additional $300+ dollars’ worth of build quality in the La Creuset of the same size as the 5.5 quart I bought here.The Overmont is a high quality item with a nice collection of extras (two handle covers, a silicone rest, a recipe book), and no discernible elements that are likely to fail in the future. In short, a fantastic savings! I bought one for myself and second for my mom as a birthday gift. She loves it too.I understand the allure of the brand name buy, but my personal opinion is that it’s a waste of money on this one.
