Vermiculite is used as a soil amendment to promote better aeration & root growth or as a component in synthetic planting media. It's perfect for storing Begonia, canna, caladium, & Dahlia bulbs before planting. Burpee Vermiculite is 100% natural & pure & is OMRI listed for organic gardening.

Review: Great stuff for topping off itty bitty tiny seeds! - There is currently a shortage of vermiculite, so I was thrilled to find it for a good price on here. This is fine grade...perfect for lightly covering seeds that need light to germinate. This is not what you want to store dahlias. Overall, it's a good value and beats trying to crush larger pieces with a rolling pin. I've had lots of vermiculite, but this is the first time I've tried fine grade for horticulture use. Typically I buy whatever I can find, stick it in a Ziploc, and roll/crush it to death to get it so it's fine grade. There's always leftover pieces in it, though, that are too big and have to be picked out. This was used over tiny seeds that needed light to germinate. I put the seeds on the seed starting soil, and then sprinkle the vermiculite on top. The seeds germinated as expected. Note: you'll need a very low pressure water bottle so you can fine mist before applying heavier water, or the vermiculite and seeds will blow everywhere. One tip is to spray directly down on them at first to minimize the blowing, and then you can water like normal. Once your seedlings are up, you can bottom water. Highly recommend! The price was the same as all my local options, too.

There is currently a shortage of vermiculite, so I was thrilled to find it for a good price on here. This is fine grade...perfect for lightly covering seeds that need light to germinate. This is not what you want to store dahlias. Overall, it's a good value and beats trying to crush larger pieces with a rolling pin. I've had lots of vermiculite, but this is the first time I've tried fine grade for horticulture use. Typically I buy whatever I can find, stick it in a Ziploc, and roll/crush it to death to get it so it's fine grade. I use this vermiculite when starting new fig trees from shoots. It helps soil retain moisture much better and greatly increases my success in propagation. Increases time between required watering.
