I put the heat pack inside of a Snuggle Puppy stuffed animal so that the heat pack was NOT directly in contact with my puppy. The heat pack worked very well inside of the stuffed animal. I used them every night until my puppy was about two months old. (This was during the winter.) **Q: How are these any different than a hand warmer?** A: The warming packs are very similar. Technically I don’t know the difference. I’m not sure how warm the hand warmers are but these don’t get real hot. Because our puppy came home to us in January and was only about 7 weeks old. You can use both or either/or. We got our puppy when it was still cool- cold at night and from the very first night, I used both. After almost three weeks, it was starting to get a little warmer and I quit using the heated packs. We used the heartbeat until our puppy figured out how to take the Velcro loose and get it out himself. Now he just has the dog.
