I wore a chemical respirator and goggles when setting it up and the smell was still overwhelming and potentially dangerous. DO NOT UNDER ANY CIRCUMSTANCES BREATHE IN THE GAS! It starts reacting instantly and no readily available equipment will protect you from it. Hold your breath, dump it in water and RUN don't look back or delay for anything. I used the entire bag for a 1200sqft apartment and it worked very well for removing the old pet/mildew smell. I set it up in a 5 gallon bucket with an air stone by the intake to the HVAC system and let it circulate for 24 hours. After 24 hours the smell is still very strong so I'd recommend having a chemical respirator for going in to open windows, at that point it was weak enough the respirator could handle it. But strong enough you don't want to breathe it. There was a faint residual chlorine smell for about a week that was very pleasant in my opinion but is now completely gone. I did the treatment about 5 months ago and it's permanently removed about 95% of the smell.
