It is heat activated by the air temperature heating the gas and/or oil in the tube. You can adjust the settings by tightening or loosing the thread adjustment on the tube. It is not an exact but merely a guess. But I am still amazed by this simple device. The install was a little challenged but I was able to modify slightly to mount on existing channels in framing of green house. Good luck. **Q: Does this opener qualify as the palram automatic vent opener?** A: No no no! You have to drill and screw it in! With the Palram greenhouse they provide sliders that slide the vent opener. You can’t screw into the metal oh the greenhouse way too hard. Only buy the one from palram. You can still get it threw amazon **Q: Can these be installed on any window or just palram?** A: You would need to verify that the window is the same general construction as the Palram. I purchased my sister a greenhouse from Harbor Freight that was about 1/3 the cost of the Palram. The construction was generally the same so I purchased this closer for her. It works there. I assume most of these windows hinge in a lip at the top and then a manual opener installs at the bottom. If yours is like that then this should work. ## Customer Reviews ### ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ Works perfectly in my Palram greenhouse! *by T***Z on August 11, 2021* Others have said that is was difficult to install in a Palram greenhouse but I found it quite simple. The attachment brackets must have been improved because the one that attached to the greenhouse accommodated the bolt that was in the old Palram vent opener. I did have to drill out the bracket that attached to the vent slightly to make it just a bit larger to allow the two bolts to pass through. The vent opener opens MUCH wider than the Palram one ever did and closes tight when the temperature drops to 70 degrees. This was a very good buy and I highly recommend this product. I only gave it 4 stars on the "Easy to Install" because I had to drill the bracket but anyone with a drill and the right size bit can do the same thing I did. Must alter one bracket to use with Palram greenhouse. *by K***N on June 14, 2019* Bought this for my Palram 6x8 greenhouse. This does work, however two things that could be improved. If the window bracket had just a tiny bit wider slots, the slide bolts that are used everywhere on the greenhouse, would fit through and we would be able to use them to affix the opener. The slots on the frame bracket ARE wide enough. I wasn't ABOUT to drill holes in my expensive greenhouse, so I used a metal drill on the slot on the window bracket so I could use the Palram slide bolts on both ends. Works perfectly, but I wouldn't be able to return it since i altered it.In the directions, they should mention that if it's summer and you're trying to install the cylinder into the housing, you should put the cylinder in the freezer for 15 minutes first, then push the piston rod in and out a few times to make it move smoothly. Then it is easy to screw it into the housing with the window shut. And, as the cylinder warms up it'll open so you'll know it's working. I had to get this hint from another review or I would have thought the product was defective because I was trying to screw it into the housing while the piston rod is fully extended and trying to open the window.
