The highest step means it's running at about 500GPH, if it is only running over the next step down- 400GPH etc... So in other words, if I lift the lid and find the water only running over a lower step, I know it needs to be cleaned! And with this filter it is as simple as hosing off a special foam pad that lays over these special ceramic-looking bio pellets. My pond stays nice and clean,and I no longer have to pull a stinky box filter from the bottom of the water. If you have any questions, please call Ani Mate Customer Service at 800 725 4333. **Q: can i use it 220v** A: No. It is not 220 rated **Q: How do you change uv bulb for Fish mate 500?** A: 1.unplug it 2. you will see screws (on most 4 of them) on the top of the lid 2 of them in the front by the flip up lid are the ones that you need to get to for the light the other 2 are to secure the top to the base. If you bend the flip up out a little it will come off the 2 plastic pins it rolls on and that will make it easier to do the screws. once open the 2 ends of the bulb are plugs that pull off then slide the old light out and reinstall new bulb in reverse. put it all back together in reverse of disassembly. take pictures as you go along with you phone if you can and you should be fine I hope this helps. ## Customer Reviews ### ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ Clear water *by A***E on September 13, 2014* This is my second Fish Mate and it too works like a champ. It was difficult to find a filter for a small pond that could be used reasonably well with a smaller pump, but this one fit the bill. I hooked it up with very few problems (took a couple of tries to get the right size tubing), and I've never set up any pond equipment prior to this one. Our pond had been completely neglected for over a year since the house was unoccupied for awhile before we bought it and moved in. After setting it up, the pond was crystal clear within 24-48 hours. Cleaning is easy and it's kept the pond clean ever since.
