The best tips I can give you are, make sure you use hot water (I used boiling) and to mix this outside, this stuff is potent. For a ring I would boil a cup of water and put a very small piece in and stir it until it dissolves. Dip the ring and see if it's dark enough. If not, add another small piece until it's the correct shade. Good luck. **Q: What is the ratio to water, how much will this make, or how many square inches of metal can it treat?** A: Don’t remember the ratio I used but I know I tried many ways to make it work and it didn’t work for me- I hope u have better luck than I did **Q: Would this stain a bathtub?** A: Sorry, I don't know. I bought it to turn copper black since it chemically reacts with copper. I was hoping for dark brown but the color is more dark charcoal. The package suggests a ratio of 1 ounce of product to 1 quart of water, which I did. The action is quite fast so get your copper in and out quickly and rinse it off. Too long and it forms big black flakes all over the surface. The instructions say if that happens to add more water. I had to double the water to get the reaction down to a duration I could deal with with my fairly large object (couldn't dunk it). I feel the instructions should be more conservative of the product and start with 1/2 ounce of chemical to a quart of water.
