Had started making a whirring sound when cold, but no real shifting issues. Did the drain and refill procedure and it's quiet and shifts smoother now. I feel pretty lucky. The old fluid didn't smell burnt, and there were no metal flakes or glitter in it at all. What makes it easy is to have 2 identical gallon jugs. Pour the old fluid in one, pour a matching amount of new fluid in the other jug (approx 3.5 quarts). That way you replace the perfect amount. Easier job than expected, watch a youtube tutorial before you do this, and also you have to do it at least 1 more time after 200 miles.
