There is no way it could heat up substrate, I followed previous reviewers advice and stuck it to the side of tank. Its still cold. I purchased this as I have recently bought a bigger tank and thought I'd need more heat for my Gargoyle Gecko (I have one heat mat already on the other side of the tank ,a different type, and it gives out a lot more heat than this.
