Seeing stains is somewhat difficult (the reason I bought it!). I am able to see some areas if I know where to look but just scanning I can't see discoloration. And I know for a fact there are markings I'm not aware of. I tried testing it in the bathroom, thinking for sure I'd find something gross in there, but nothing. I'm glad I did. It does a fine job of making cat urine stains fluoresce, and has been very helpful. It's a good choice, especially for the price.For those who need directions on how to insert the batteries, it's pretty simple. The negative pole of each included AAA battery goes on the spring-loaded side of the battery carrier. Once all three batteries are in, look closely at the carrier: it has a "+" and a "-" end. The "+" side gets inserted into the flashlight body, so that the negative side makes contact with the end cap that you'll screw on.
