After several attempts we used some adhesive pads and all was well. I quite liked the subtle but effective backlighting effect in various hues (though not as many as claimed, as far as I could see). But after just over 12 months the lights gave up - connections were fine, replaced remote battery just in case, but the lights were definitely dead.
