It was said in the reviews: "A book that belongs on the shelf alongside The Gulag Archipelago"  I don't think so. Just a long essay with a bunch of useless pictures (with pretension to be artsy?)  Very disappointed

    Confronting the unknowingness

A most valuable contribution, humanizing a few fragments of the Stalinist state terror, the mass killings and often deadly deportations to labor camps, and the meager attempts at memorializing the many millions of victims.  The title refers to a deliberate and enforced unknowingness, as opposed to forgetting.The photos are bleak, stark, grim and ominous, black-and-white, horizontal, on about 7.5 x 10 inch pages without numbers, borders or captions, thus no distractions, 32 being double-page spreads, another 22 single page.  The captions are listed on p.158, at the end of the book.Among the unaccounted unremembered victims in the Soviet Union from the 1930s to 1950s were intellectuals, independent thinkers, nonconformists, suspected homosexuals, Ukrainians and others accused of nationalism, Jews, idealistic Communists (Stalin murdered virtually all the Old Bolsheviks, all the party members, they knew too much), and mostly persons seemingly random, or denounced due to such things as grudges and envy, or just having relatives or acquaintances who had been previously informed on, for anything or nothing.  As a result of the state terror it became a characteristic of the society, persisting to the current Russian regime of Putin, to never remember.  The few living memories are perishing among the elderly.Courageously persisting in this project, despite bureaucratic roadblocks and police harassment, the two authors deserve great appreciation for the thoughtfully composed English text interspersed with well-chosen photos.
