The preserved reindeer moss is non-toxic and flame retardant and intended for interior use only. It should not be used in a terrarium with live animals. Stays soft. If the air turns extremely dry, the reindeer moss will harden some but returns to normal softness with the return of normal humidity. The reindeer moss is colorfast, but we suggest you push it to the side when watering live plants, so not to wash away the components that makes our reindeer moss soft. The entire bottom half of the moss was very dirty, discolored by soil and filled with debris which is why, I would guess, the back of the plastic container isn't shown. I did expect a certain amount of that since the review I read was negative about the moss quality, but I was still taken aback by how much was in that condition. That said, the upper half of the container did have some debris in it, but no more than other brands of moss I use on a regular basis and the color was good. I removed the unusable moss and still had plenty for my project, two times over and definitely more than most bags I have purchased elsewhere, more than enough to consider the price I paid fair. The biggest negative for me was the time it took to separate the unusable moss. I have to say, it was truly a mess and not something I care to repeat. Otherwise, what I could use was soft and very nice. I do think this is misrepresented in the picture which gives the impression the entire container is filled with the clean moss shown. If the container was turned over to the back side and displayed, I seriously doubt many people would purchase it.
