You simply slide one pole into the 3-legged section. Then put the other end (of the middle pole), into the butterfly section. It took me about 20 seconds to put it together. Once you get the hang of it, you should be able to put it together in less than 10 seconds. **Q: Would this hold a 1in binder okay?** A: The music “shelf” is only 3/4” depth. But think with your binder open, would hold fine, plus there are 2 weighted/spring type holders on the shelf itself, to hold your music. But if you have to turn a page, you’d have to flip those underneath & out of the way. Hope this helps. **Q: Why can't I attach to top piece-the piece that holds the music, into the middle piece. Loosened the screw-something stops it the insertion.** A: I think we had the same issue: a small black part inside the tube is preventing the next tube to slid in. It seems like it should push open with the other tube, but it seemed stuck. We forcefully pushed it through, then inserted the tube, then put the now-loose black piece into its place. All assembled. **Q: Are the stand and the screws strong enough to hold a binder folder without shaking?** A: It’s a sturdy little thing. The only issue with the binder is if it is too thick it may slide off as the shelf part that holds the music is not that wide.
