It's a thin layer over the wood, so it's not squishy, but provides a slightly softer, more comfortable place to hold than if it was just the wood. This nib holder also takes both sizes of nibs. I only have one kind so far - the Zebra G nib - but it holds it really well, while also making it super easy to take the nib out. I like that it comes with a cap, too, and the cap actually posts (chunks onto the back end), which I wasn't expecting! I don't know what else I could ask for with this, plus the price is low enough that I don't feel bad getting ink on it. Love it and highly recommend it, especially if you're just starting out with these, like me!
