I've been using a pair of these for the last year or so in my new workshop and I don't know how I got along without them! I just got through putting together a workbench using the 4X4 Basics Work Bench Kit and a set of shelves on it with the 4X4 Basics Shelf Links system. With the rubber caps on the clamping faces I didn't have to worry about marking the finish on the pieces either like the old pipe clams or big C clamps would. UPDATE 11/2/12 Well, now that I'm getting into using the workshop I spent the last year building and tooling up I'm now ordering another 4 piece set of these clamps. I forgot to add before that I was a little worried about these being made of,, you guessed it, plastic. But the four piece micro clamp set and the 2 piece 18" pair I got have held up under the heaviest use and the most clamping force that I can put on them. Which with my big hands, & since I'm 6'4" and 240 pounds I have pretty big hands and a very strong grip, so I can put a LOT of force on clamping these. I think they would even hold up if you used one clamp to squeeze down the clamp on another one. So again I can highly recommend these for anybody that has a workshop. Anything from your kitchen table to a small area in a back room, or a closet in a bedroom turned into a work space, or a full basement or garage workshop, and up to a full sized manufacturing company with a building covering 10 acres. The advertising for these characterizes them as “Medium Duty”, as does the packaging they came with. The Jorgensen 6” clamps are characterized as “Light Duty”, which is odd because the opposite is true. These are not medium duty clamps. The similar Jorgensen “light” clamps are far more robust, though at the time of purchase they cost about one-third more. Know that these are not dual-use “spreader” clamps. The similar Jorgensens are dual use spreaders. I kept both sets, but for the slightly higher price, I’d buy the Jorgensens; they’re by far more robust and versatile. These are cheap, but they feel cheap. The prices of each seem to vary widely by the week, so track them in your save-for-later box if price is an issue. 2026 UPDATE: I’ve worked with these now for almost three years, and came back to increase the rating from four stars to five. The reason is that I’ve used these side-by-side with the Jorgensen equivalent, and I find myself always reaching for these first, rather than for the Jorgensens, a preference that is clear. I know it says 6" steel bar. Or is that the clamping size?** A: I just received the 4 Pack of 6 inch Clamps. With the clamp fully opened there is 6 3/4 inches between the pads. **Q: Do these also function as spreaders?** A: Yes, it should work as the answer described "By Tim… on January 26, 2022". But you need to physically remove the end blocker by drilling the hole bigger. OR, just buy other brands which already have Clamp & Spreader in 1 (search "clamp/spreader" on Amazon). **Q: The picture shows a "Made in USA" Are these indeed made in the USA?** A: I bought this set today (8/10/18) from the local big box outfit... nowhere on the clamps is anything about a country of origin; however a packaging sticker indicates 'Made in China to IRWIN® specifications'. The same sticker reveals that Irwin is apparently now a 'Newell Rubbermaid Brand'. Thats news to me, but then again I haven't been keeping up with them. Haven't used the clamps yet, just here looking up their rating/s. **Q: How long is the clamp? I know it says 6", but that just seems wrong.** A: I have a bunch of this size. The jaws can open to 7" if you take the pads off. Irwin is known for quality and these are extremely easy to use. The handle is easy the squeeze and they lock up tight. They are light weight and perfect for most projects. They are very durable and will last a lifetime. Irwin's color scheme is a lot better than the generic ones out there. I bought for general wood working but they were also very useful to repair the console cover for my 3000GT. The factory glue is failed and these will help it look like new.
